Mini Excavator vs Backhoe Loader — which to buy

Both can dig, both can load, but they win in completely different jobs. Here is the honest Australian breakdown.

Where the mini excavator wins

Tight access, slewing 360 degrees, working over deep services and easy float on a 4.5 t car licence trailer (for sub 3 t classes). The default machine for landscaping, plumbing, pool builds and tier two civils.

Where the backhoe still wins

Hwy speed travel between jobs, big front bucket for loading trucks, road building maintenance and councils that need one machine to do everything. Strong rural and shire fleet preference.

Total cost per hour

A 5 t mini excavator runs at roughly $35 to $50 per hour all in (fuel, maintenance, depreciation). A 14 t backhoe is closer to $55 to $75. If you only need one, run the numbers against your actual job mix.
