Glossary

The language of plant.

Quick definitions for the acronyms and jargon you'll see in spec sheets, finance contracts and Australian compliance docs.

Chattel Mortgage

Most common AU equipment loan structure

You take ownership of the machine on day one and the lender registers a charge against it on the PPSR. Interest is tax deductible, GST is claimable up front and depreciation is claimed by your business.

Balloon / Residual

Lump sum left at the end of the term

A balloon lowers your monthly repayment by deferring part of the principal to the final payment. Typical for plant is 20 to 40 percent over a 4 to 5 year term. You can refinance, trade or pay it out.

GST on Plant

10 percent applied at sale

Equipment is quoted ex GST in the trade. Registered ABNs claim the GST back on the next BAS, so financing the GST is common to keep cash in the business.

Instant Asset Write Off

Immediate deduction up to threshold

ATO program letting eligible small businesses immediately deduct the cost of qualifying assets up to a threshold (currently $20,000 per asset for SBEs in 2025 to 2026). Always check the current rules with your accountant.

ROPS / FOPS

Roll Over and Falling Object Protective Structures

Australian Standard AS 2294 / AS 1636 cabin certifications. Required for most earthmoving and lifting plant operating on commercial sites.

Tier 4 Final / Stage V

Modern emissions compliance

US EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V are the strictest off road diesel emissions standards. Australia does not yet mandate them but tier compliant engines are now standard on premium European plant.

Operating Weight

Working mass of the machine

Includes the standard bucket, full fuel, hydraulic oil and a 75 kg operator. Used for float trailer compliance and ground bearing pressure calculations.

Payload

Maximum legal carry weight

For dumpers and trucks this is the manufacturer rated load you can move. Australian sites are strict on overloading because of tipping and brake performance.

Dig Depth

Maximum vertical reach below ground

Measured to the cutting edge of the bucket with the boom and dipper fully extended. Critical for trenching jobs where you need to clear a service or footing depth in a single pass.

PPSR

Personal Property Securities Register

Federal register for security interests over moveable assets. Always check the PPSR before buying used plant to confirm there is no existing finance against it.
